The summaries below highlight selected actions taken by the UNC Board of Governors during its regular October meeting.

James E. Holshouser Award for Excellence in Public Service
During the October meeting the Board presented the 2015 James E. Holshouser Award for Public Service. For the first time in the history of the award, there were two winners: Sylvia Flack, executive director of the Center of Excellence for the Elimination of Health Disparities at Winston-Salem State University; and Carmen Russoniello, director and professor in the Center for Applied Psychophysiology at East Carolina University. The award is given to faculty who demonstrate sustained, distinguished achievement in university public service and outreach and contribute to improving the quality of life for North Carolina citizens.

NC State Student a Star in Supernova Research
During the Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs, NC State University student Mithi (Mia) de los Reyes presented her undergraduate research in Supernova Turbulence. She was joined by Professor John Blondin, department head of physics at NC State. Reyes participated in a special physics program at NC State and the pair developed a great mentor-student relationship. Blondin has nurtured one of NC State’s brightest science students, and de los Reyes has been able to study with one of the top astrophysicists in the country.

Transfer Student Report
The Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs received the annual Transfer Student Report. The report presents information about the UNC system’s undergraduate transfer student population, including enrollment trends, demographics and majors of transfer students as well as other initiatives focused on the transfer student population. Approximately 28% of undergraduates enrolled at UNC campuses transferred from another institution.
During the same meeting, the new Transfer Student Success website was presented. Launched in April 2015, the website provides students and other stakeholders with current information and data related to all aspects of the transfer experience. The website complements the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between the UNC and NC Community College systems, which is designed to enable seamless transfer to one of our UNC campuses.

UNC Global Connection Report
The UNC Global Connection Report was presented to members of the Educational Planning, Policies and Programs Committee for information only. The report provides updates on the number of UNC students participating in study abroad programs and their locations; the number, academic levels and countries of origin of international students coming to UNC; and international campus connections through faculty collaborations.

Degree Program Proposals
The Board approved NC State’s request to establish a BS in Behavioral and Social Sciences degree program and UNC Wilmington’s request to establish Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology programs.

Online Learning Report
Members of the Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs received the Online Learning Report for information only. The report contains data and analysis surrounding the diverse online educational activities occurring at UNC institutions, including demographics on student enrollment data, information on students enrolled full-time and part-time, a comparison of online and face-to-face course outcomes, and next steps in this emerging area of UNC education.

Expansion of Internship Pilot
The UNC Board of Governors’ five-year strategic plan, Our Time, Our Future, calls for UNC to “form a partnership with businesses across the state to support growth in experiential learning opportunities for students prior to their graduation.” The Board approved funding to expand the internship pilot program from six campuses to 16. The program aims to help raise the number of students who graduate with internship experience and to establish a new conduit for offering internships within small and medium-sized NC companies.

The UNC Research Opportunities Initiative provides targeted funding for innovative and potentially game-changing research projects by faculty on UNC campuses. These projects have the potential to promote economic development and position North Carolina as a leader in strategically important research areas. During the Strategic Directions Committee meeting, ROI program administrators presented a video highlighting the collaborative work of NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill in Pharmacoengineering.

Resolution Honoring Former Chairman John Fennebresque
During the full board meeting, a resolution was presented honoring former chairman John Fennebresque’s service to the UNC system and to the people of North Carolina.
